When I was a kid, I obsessed over the Kids Next Door, and how they where able to create such weaponry out of household items. One of my favorites was the laser gun made of soup cans and a magnifying glass. So, I made a prof version of it. And Each piece of it has a little story behind it.
The Magnifying Glass: This was the very first item I got for the project, over 10 years ago. My dad gave it to me and since then, I had hopes of building this laser. Except when I was a kid, I was planning for it to be real. Theoretically, this project took 10 years to make.
Wooden Base and Handle: The where sitting in my fire pit wood pile in my backyard for who knows how long. The only word working tools I have are a drill and circular saw, so I did my best fashioning a handle. Since the wood had been sitting outside, it was worn out and dirty, just like on the show.
Cans: The small one had peas in it, the larger one had croutons. The large one had a red plastic lid, allowing me to cut in into the shape of a reticle. However, it needed to paint to match the can and the original color was hard to match so I painted that too. Then the metal texture of the small can stood out, so I painted that a darker gray.
Pop Bottle: I was gonna use a glass Sprite bottle I found in the Hispanic section of my grocery store, but it was too long and would've been to heavy. I switch to plastic because it's lighter and easier to work with.
Flashlight: Ordered a 3 pack of these older fashion Ever-ready flashlights off ebay for $5, but they where yellow and black. So I spray painted one to look more like the one seen on the show.
Front Handle: This one was tricky, since it wasn't really a household items. I made this by taking a 1.5 in X 1.5 in X 4 in piece of wood, wrapping string around it nice and tight, spray painted it (using the same paint from the flashlight) and using a cap from a pill bottle that i painted black for the bottom. I know it's quite long compared to the back handle, I guess when making it I was thinking of those giant hands from the show.
